During the rainiest July on record for the people of Ventris County in Oklahoma, in the midst of a violent thunderstorm, a stranger is murdered. When a friend becomes the second person to die under suspicious circumstances, local sleuth Darcy Campbell is drawn into the investigation. Evidence points toward someone she cares about, but has loyalty blinded her to the truth? Danger is closer to Darcy and her mother, Flora, than either of them suspect. And if the human threat is not enough, Lee Creek and the Ventris River flood, bringing Mother Nature into the fray.

During a very rainy storm, a stranger knocks on Flora’s door, just to leave running at the sight of her. Short time after, this man appears dead, but he won’t be the only one.

I absolutely love this series! And this book is no exception. I enjoy any cozy mystery due to their light nature and the guesswork I have to do while I listen to them, but this series has more interesting elements than most: Not only the characters are quite interesting, but the plots are usually quite convoluted, and they catch my attention from the start. There are usually also quite some surprises along the way, and there is more risk and danger involved than in other cozy mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, while also discovering more about some of the characters’ past. As in previous books, a natural disaster is again an important character in the story, adding an extra layer of excitement. I just can’t get enough of these adventures!

I have to confess that the only reason I tried this series was because of Michelle Babb, and I am happy that I did! She is one of my favorite narrators and she has a natural talent to bring characters to life and make stories shine. I could listen to her telling me stories for hours on end.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
