Vortex tells the story of Turk Findley, the protagonist introduced in Axis, who is transported ten thousand years into the future by the mysterious entities called "the Hypotheticals." In this future humanity exists on a chain of planets connected by Hypothetical gateways; but Earth itself is a dying world, effectively quarantined.
Turk and his young friend Isaac Dvali are taken up by a community of fanatics who use them to enable a passage to the dying Earth, where they believe a prophecy of human/Hypothetical contact will be fulfilled. The prophecy is only partly true, however, and Turk must unravel the truth about the nature and purpose of the Hypotheticals before they carry him on a journey through warped time to the end of the universe itself.

Turk Findley, from book 2, returns as one of the main characters. Once again, we get a superficial romance, apparently a requirement for many authors who can’t imagine a friendship or non-romantic relationship between a man and a woman. Why physical intimacy is necessary when fighting for a common goal is beyond me, and it’s simply bad writing.

A cult is again at the center of the story, which was equally disappointing. I found that all the books in this series focused more on human drama than on alien life or exploration. The ending redeemed the story somewhat, but not enough to offset my disappointment. I expected to learn more about the mystery of the Hypotheticals, but we discover very little, and what we do learn is underwhelming.

Overall, I’d only recommend the first book in the series, and even then, not for readers genuinely interested in space and first contact.
