Overal Rating:
Late in the twenty-sixth century, the human race has advanced enough to accidentally trigger the Inhibitors - alien killing machines designed to detect intelligent life and destroy it. The only hope for humanity lies in the recovery of a secret cache of doomsday weapons -and a renegade named Clavain who is determined to find them. But other factions want the weapons for their own purposes - and the weapons themselves have another agenda altogether...
After enjoying Revelation Space so much, Redemption Ark was a bit of a disappointment. Many reviews agree that the character development is much better in this one, and while I usually prefer well-developed characters, this made the story drag a bit in the middle.
Dan Sylveste was an ass, and Volyova was a bitch, but I was somehow more able to relate to them than to Clavain or Antoinette. I think the ever-present shadow of the Inhibitors didn’t feel real enough after the first scenes, where there’s a description of the Inhibitors’ remnants on Galiana. It reminded me a bit of Spin and its sequels by Robert Charles Wilson, where the Hypotheticals are also a looming but faraway presence that doesn’t actually feel real. Spin is a later book than this one, so I wonder if the Hypotheticals are based on Reynolds’s Inhibitors.
The ending was quite powerful, though, and it has made me want to continue with the series, despite having read mixed reviews of the next book. It’s a world that I find appealing, and I’m planning on also reading minor books related to it.

My name is Elena. Since I was a little child I loved science fiction and fantasy, and I can’t resist a good novel. In 2015, while wait I started to listen to audiobooks and I discovered the pleasure in being able to read while doing my daily tasks, so there’s always an audiobook playing on my phone. If you see me with my Bluetooth headphones on, please be gentle, I get easily startled.
I live with my boyfriend, which I met during my six-year stay in Belgium, four cockatiels, eight lovebirds, and a hamster in Madrid, Spain; and I like to spend my free time knitting and sewing while listening to audiobooks.
